Queensland 6d. specimen handstamps

For general information on the specimen handstamps for the first sideface stamps see here.

Kenneth Scudder in his book "Queensland Postage Stamps 1879 to 1912", lists a number of specimen handstamps found on this issue. They are:
  • Type 1. Capitals sans-serif, 21 mm x 2.5 mm. Known in black and violet, diagonally up from left to right. Seen on yellow green shades. Yellow green were first printed in December 1879 and so these specimen examples were printed first. However Scudder notes that the supply of new inks only arrived from England in November 1880 and so these examples would have been handstamped after this date
  • Type 2. Roman capitals, 23.5 mm x 3.25 mm. Known in black, diagonally down from left to right. It was introduced in mid to late 1880. Seen on green shades. This shade was first printed in 1881
  • Type 3. Capitals sans-serif, 15 mm x 2 mm. Known from one example in red. It is thought to have been introduced around 1880. Seen on a blue green stamp. This shade is scarce and dates from after 1881
So it would appear that these were produced on at least 4 different occasions. By far the rarest is type 3, with only one example seen. Type 1 is very scarce in black. Type 2 is scarce. Type 1 is most common in violet.
