Queensland First Sideface Specimen and Cancelled handstamps

There are 4 different printed specimen handstamps known. Three are listed by Kenneth Scudder in his book "Queensland Postage Stamps 1879 to 1912", as follows:

• Type 1. Capitals sans-serif, 21 mm x 2.5 mm. Not seen on the 1s which is presumed to have been printed in May 1880, so this Type must have been used before this date. Seen on perforated issues only
• Type 2. Roman capitals, 23.5 mm x 3.25 mm. It was introduced in mid to late 1880. Seen on perforated issues only
• Type 3. Capitals sans-serif, 15 mm x 2 mm. Known imperforate and perforate. It is thought to have been introduced around 1880. Alan Griffith has suggested that this handstamp may have been applied to these stamps as part of the Queensland Government material prepared for Universal Postal Union distribution circa 1895

The fourth type is:

• Capitals sans serif 17 x 3 mm. Seen on the 1d stamp duty only

Scudder Type 1. Seen on

• ½d. overprint black diagonally upwards and inverted downwards (perforate)
• 1d in black and violet diagonally upwards (perforate)
• 2d in black diagonally upwards and downwards (perforate)
• 4d in black and violet diagonally upwards (perforate)
• 6d in black and violet diagonally upwards (perforate)

Scudder Type 2. Seen on

• 1d in black and red diagonally upwards (perforate)
• 2d in black diagonally upwards and downwards (perforate)
• 4d in black diagonally upwards and downwards (perforate)
• 6d in black diagonally downwards (perforate)
• 1s in black diagonally upwards (perforate)

Scudder Type 3. Seen on

• 1d in red horizontally (imperforate)
• 4d in red horizontally (perforate)
• 6d in red horizontally (perforate)
• 1d duty stamp in black horizontally (Type 3b) (perforate and imperforate)
• Alan Griffith also notes the existence of this handstamp on the 1 shilling issue

Manuscript cancellations are known with the word fully spelt out on perforated issues. Manuscript cancellations with the word S are also known on imperforate proof issues.

There is one printed cancelled handstamp known, Scudder Type 1 Cancelled handstamp, which comprised capitals sans serif, 21 x 2.75 mm


Scudder Type 1. Seen on

• 2d in black horizontally inverted
• 4d in black diagonally upwards
• 6d in black horizontally and vertically upwards
