Queensland 1d stamp duty plate proofs

A Die Proof in black on India paper was produced. The only one known to exist is in the H.L. White Collection in the Mitchell Library, and appears to have been taken before the thinning of the outer border lines

Die Proof in the H.L. White Collection in the Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW

Three types of Plate Proofs are known:

  • An early full sheet printed in Brisbane on unwatermarked paper, printed in a very pale brown-purple colour This was sent to De La Rue Printers in England as an example of the sheet layout required for the new 120 set watermarked paper
  • Printed in pale brown-purple, on card. A few singles are known cancelled by part of a double ring
  • Printed in a reddish violet on card. These were probably produced last

Full sheet from the collection of Ken Scudder
